Civil engineering

Do you also do civil engineering in Hobart?

Yes. Civil engineering for homes and small developments is part of what we do, under the same Engineer – Civil licence that covers structural and geotechnical work in Tasmania.

On Hobart sites that usually means stormwater and drainage (property stormwater beyond a 290 m² roof catchment is notifiable plumbing work designed by a licensed designer), site classification on reactive clays, retaining walls on cut and fill, and landslip reports in a Landslip Hazard Code band.

We don't prepare bushfire (BAL) assessments or bushfire hazard management plans: an accredited bushfire hazard practitioner prepares those.

FAQ

Questions about our services

What does a structural engineer do?
A structural engineer works out how a building carries its loads, inspects structures that are cracking or moving, and designs and certifies footings, beams, walls and frames. We inspect, diagnose, design and certify; we never sell or carry out repairs.
What's the difference between a civil and a structural engineer in Tasmania?
Both work under the same Tasmanian licence class, Engineer – Civil, which covers civil, structural and geotechnical engineering. Structural work is the building itself; civil work is the ground and water around it, such as stormwater, drainage and retaining.
Do all services need a site visit?
No. Photos or plans are enough to quote, and some services, such as an underpinning quote second opinion, are done from documents alone. Your quote says whether a site visit is needed.
Which areas do you cover?
Site visits across Greater Hobart: Hobart, Clarence, Glenorchy, Kingborough, Brighton, Sorell, the Huon Valley and the Derwent Valley. Desktop reviews, design and certification from photos and plans are available Tasmania-wide. See areas we cover.
Do you do bushfire (BAL) assessments?
No. BAL assessments and bushfire hazard management plans are prepared by an accredited bushfire hazard practitioner. We do the structural and civil engineering and work alongside their report.
Do you carry out repairs?
No. We are engineering only. If a repair is needed, we design it and any licensed builder can build it. We don't sell repairs or recommend contractors.
