In short
A structural engineer for Launceston can design beams, decks, retaining walls and extensions, review underpinning quotes and issue a Form 35, all from photos and plans. Our engineers hold the Tasmanian Engineer – Civil licence, which covers the whole state. Our site visits are based in Greater Hobart, so inspections in Launceston, Devonport or Burnie are by quote. A quote second opinion starts from $390 + GST.

What can a structural engineer do for a Launceston property from photos and plans?
A structural engineer can do most design and review work for a Launceston property from photos and plans. Desktop work suits jobs where the question is "what should be built" rather than "what has gone wrong", and every design comes with a Form 35 for your building surveyor.

Which Launceston jobs need someone on site?
Jobs that diagnose a problem need someone on site: crack and movement reports, pre-purchase structural inspections, dilapidation reports, and anything where the cause is hidden behind linings or under a floor. Our site visits are based in Greater Hobart. For Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and the north-west, site inspection availability is by quote: ask, and we'll tell you whether a visit can be arranged, what it costs and when.
Desktop work has limits as well. We assess only what the photos and documents show, and the review or design says so plainly. If the information isn't enough to answer safely, the quote lists what else is needed, such as measured drawings, more photos or a site classification report for the lot.
Does Launceston have reactive clay?
Some Launceston sites do. Mineral Resources Tasmania, writing about a house in Lindisfarne on Hobart's eastern shore, observed that dolerite clays swell with moisture and had already been linked to cracked buildings in Launceston as well as Hobart. That doesn't make every Launceston lot reactive. A site classification to AS 2870 sets the class for a particular block, and any footing, slab, deck or pool design should follow it.
For desktop design, send the site classification report with your plans. If there isn't one yet, the quote will say so before any design starts, so you aren't paying for drawings that have to change.
Are Tasmania's building rules the same in Launceston?
Yes. The building categories under the Building Act 2016 apply across Tasmania, so the thresholds in Launceston match those in Hobart:
- Decks: a deck with no roof, standing under 1 m off the ground, is low-risk work. Anything higher or roofed is notifiable.
- Retaining walls: the low-risk limit is 1.2 m of retained soil, cut to 0.5 m near a boundary, road or right of way. A licensed builder can go to 1.8 m with an engineer's design.
- Underpinning, major structural repairs, pools and pool barriers: notifiable, with a building surveyor's Certificate of Likely Compliance.
- Hazard areas: landslip, flood, coastal or bushfire mapping lifts low-risk work to notifiable.
- Building code: NCC 2022 applies in Tasmania until 30 April 2027, and NCC 2025 from 1 May 2027.
The City of Launceston publishes its building surveying forms online, and your building surveyor will tell you which certificates your project needs.
Is a Hobart-based engineer licensed for work in Launceston?
Yes. Structural engineers in Tasmania are licensed under the Occupational Licensing Act 2005 in the Engineer – Civil class, and that licence applies across the state. A Form 35 signed by a licensed engineer in Hobart is the same certificate a Launceston building surveyor receives from any Tasmanian designer. Our licence number is [licence no.].
We review, design and certify. Repairs are never ours to sell, recommend or carry out. Send your photos or plans for a fixed quote.
